Diagnosis of ADHD or ADD
The following criteria must be present:
1. 6 or more symptoms of inattention and/or 6 or more symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity that have persisted for more than 6 months and are inconsistent with the developmental age
2. Impairment from symptoms is present in two or more settings- e.g. school, work, home
3. Clear evidence of significant impairment in functioning – social, academic or job
4. Symptoms were present before 7 years

The child can have either ADHD Hyperactive Type; ADHD/ADD – Inattentive Type or ADHD – Combined Type
Hyperactivity
1. Perhaps the child is fidgeting with hands and feet
2. Maybe they are unable to remain seated when it is expected
3. Or they are always feeling restless/running or climbing excessively
4. They have difficulty with quiet leisure activities, and constantly want to do something
5. They are always feeling ‘on the go’ or like they are ‘driven by motor’ Perhaps they tend to talk excessively
Inattention
1. Maybe the child always fails to pay attention to details or makes many careless mistakes
2. They are unable to keep their attention on tasks
3. They have difficulty listening when spoken to
4. They have trouble organizing tasks
5. They tend to avoid things that require a long period of mental effort.
6. Maybe they constantly lose things you need
7. They could be easily distracted
8. Perhaps the child keeps forgetting things in daily activity
Impulsivity
1. The child perhaps is always blurting out answers before questions are finished
2. They are unable to wait their turn
3. They tend to interrupt other people’s conversations
