Natural remedies are also called alternative medicine and this is the practice of medicine without the use of drugs and may involve herbal medicines or self-awareness or biofeedback or acupuncture.

Natural remedies are important though medication is a mainstay of treatment in older children. In mild cases, preschool children and any child whose parents feel uncomfortable with medication can be given only natural remedies. Nonetheless, all children with ADHD should be offered natural remedies even if they take medication.

I would like to divide the ADHD diet for children into three groups:

  1. Lifestyle changes
  2. Diet and supplements
  3. Miscellaneous like neurofeedback, acupuncture etc.

ADHD Diet For Children Dubai: Life Style changes include

Adequate sleep

Research has shown that not sleeping adequately can give rise to ADHD-like symptoms. Healthy sleep is critical to retain information and learn skills especially children—who acquire skills at a rapid pace throughout their development—need more sleep than adults.

During these critical periods of growth and learning, younger people need a heavy dose of slumber for optimal development and alertness. One-year-olds need roughly 11 to 14 hours, school-age children between 9 and 11, and teenagers between 8 and 10.

Even half hour extra sleep can improve some problems. Having a fixed sleep schedule, relaxing bedtime routine, dimming lights and keeping the room cool can help sleep.

Exercise

When kids exercise, their brain releases chemicals called endomorphin and other neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters include dopamine, which is involved with attention.

The stimulant medicines used to treat ADHD work by increasing the amount of this same chemical in the brain. Research is showing that exercise turns on the attention system, the so-called executive functions — sequencing, working memory, prioritizing, inhibiting, and sustaining attention. Aerobic exercises are crucial to helping children with ADHD.

Some schools in the US start with 20 minutes of aerobic exercise to improve the child’s performance in the classroom. Daily exercise may not be an alternative to medication but definitely is it’s complementary.

Reducing stress

Children with ADHD have a decreased ability to cope with stressors and will react by doing anything to feel in control of their situation. Stress also depletes dopamine.  This may result in negative and oppositional ways of relating and interacting in order to simplify their environment.

This dysfunction in the brain wiring may be the source for much of the hyperactive, anxious and even aggressive behavior we may see with children who have ADHD. Avoid being hypercritical, help her do well academically and give her opportunities to succeed in other areas.

ADHD Diet For Children Dubai: Diet and supplements

Studies show that a high-protein, low-sugar, no-additive diet combined with supplements like fish oil and zinc can improve ADHD symptoms in children

High protein diet

Foods rich in protein— lean beef, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, nuts, soy, and low-fat dairy products — may have beneficial effects on ADD symptoms.

Protein-rich foods are used by the brain to make neurotransmitters, the chemicals released by brain cells to communicate with each other. Protein can prevent surges in blood sugar, which increase hyperactivity.

Eating protein for breakfast will help the body produce brain-awakening neurotransmitters.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is important in modulating the neurotransmitter dopamine at the synapses in the brain.

Magnesium

Magnesium is used to make neurotransmitters like dopamine involved in attention and concentration, and it has a calming effect on the brain. Healthy levels of magnesium can help relax children with ADHD.

Some studies have shown that adding magnesium supplements decreases some symptoms of ADHD. Magnesium helps with sleep and relaxation – a problem for children with ADHD.

Zinc

Zinc regulates the neurotransmitter dopamine, and it may make methylphenidate more effective by improving the brain’s response to dopamine. Some studies have shown that children with ADHD may have lower levels of zinc. Taking zinc supplements may reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity but not inattentiveness.

Iron

A study done in 2004 showed that the average iron level of children with ADHD (measured as ferritin) was 22, compared with 44 in non-ADHD children.

A 2008 study showed that children who were not anemic but had low ferritin levels, a protein needed to store iron in the blood, showed improvement of symptoms after 12 weeks of iron supplements.  Iron is used to make dopamine

Omega 3

Omega-3s are essential fats important for normal brain function. They are called “essential” fats because the body must get them from the diet; our bodies cannot make them. Research suggests that children with ADHD have lower blood levels of omega-3’s than kids without ADHD.

Dr. Sandy Newmark, author of ADHD Without Drugs, kids between four and eight years old should take between 1,000-1,500 mg. a day. Older kids should get 2,000-2,500 mg. daily. The recommended mix is twice the amount of EPA to DHA—the two main types of omega-3s.

Herbs

Pycnogenol, an extract made from French maritime pine bark, has been shown to improve ADHD symptoms in some studies. Gingko Bilbo and Ginseng can improve attention. Valerian can reduce anxiety.

Food sensitivities

By detecting food sensitivity and eliminating the offending food can significantly improve ADHD symptoms. However, it is not a stand-alone treatment. It should be part of a program that is used in conjunction with ADHD medication and other interventions.

A study published in Lancet showed that at the end of five weeks, 64 percent of the children on the restricted diet had significant improvement in their ADHD symptoms, while none of the control group had improved.

Food colorings and additives

Studies published in The Lancet, Pediatrics, and Journal of Pediatrics suggest that some children with ADHD are adversely affected by food additives. And a new study indicates that artificial coloring and flavors, as well as the preservative sodium benzoate, can make some non-ADD kids hyperactive.
