Anxiety disorders in children Dubai: Incidence

Anxiety disorders in children Dubai: It seems difficult to accept that children get anxious. We believe that childhood is a carefree time with only fun and games and without responsibilities. However, anxiety is seen in 25% of children from ages 13 to 18 years (US figures).

Anxiety disorders in children Dubai: Normal fears

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and can actually be beneficial in some situations as it has a protective role to play. Also, it is difficult to differentiate anxiety from normal childhood fears.

Right from toddlers who normally start fearing strangers from age 9 months, normal separation anxiety at around 12 to 18 months to early childhood as the child is exposed to new unfamiliar situations, anxiety is part of growing up.

Nonetheless, for some children, anxiety can become excessive and may negatively affect their day-to-day living.

The difference between a normal childhood fear and an anxiety disorder is that the former is temporary and usually harmless. Children who suffer from an anxiety disorder experience fear, nervousness, shyness, and avoidance of places and activities that persist despite the helpful efforts of parents, caretakers, and teachers.

Anxiety disorders in children Dubai: Impact

Anxiety is considered a disorder not based on what a child is worrying about, but rather how that worry is impacting a child’s functioning.

What the child fears  may be “normal” but help is needed when a child is experiencing too much worry or suffering immensely over what may appear to be insignificant situations, when worry and avoidance become a child’s automatic response in many situations, when they feel constantly keyed up, or when coaxing or reassurance are ineffective in moving them through.

For these children anxiety is not protecting them, but rather preventing them from fully participating in typical activities of daily life-school, friendships, academic performance.
