I. Low Anxiety and arousal environment

1. Reduce confusion and unpredictability

  • This can be done by forewarning of change
  • Use of visual timetables
  • Structured teaching
  • Clear areas for each task
  • Avoid general clutter

2. Increase the sense of calm

  • Reduce sensory overload – depending on the child’s sensory issues e.g. sensitivity to loud sounds can be helped by earmuffs
  • Have regular relaxation times in the daily timetable
  • Help child have a tool to manage anxiety like going to a corner or having a special object to hold when stressed

II. Structured environment

1. Create clear physical and/or visual boundaries to help students know where each area begins and ends

  • Segmenting the environment helps clarify expectations. Once students are taught expected behaviors for each space in the classroom, the distinct areas become powerful cues for appropriate behavior.
  • Boundaries can be created with the furniture found in the classroom, such as desks, shelves, filing cabinets, or tables, as well as with teacher-created materials such as fabric, cardboard table-top dividers, or masking tape. Visual cues, like colored rugs, labels, color coding, highlighting, or placemats, are helpful in differentiating areas as well, especially locations that may be used for more than one purpose.

2. Minimize auditory and visual distractions

  • Reduce competing distractions
  • Put all extraneous materials and supplies in cabinets, boxes, drawers or folders
  • Covering open shelves with solid colored fabric
  • A sheet covers the computer screen when not in use

III. Visual schedules and use of pictures

Visual supports are tools that are used to increase the understanding of language, environmental expectations, and to provide structure and support for individuals with ASD. They reduce anxiety improve communication and independent behavior

  • Visual timetables for the day
  • Visual schedule for a task
  • First-Then board

IV. Structured teaching

1. Work Systems refers to the systematic and organized presentation of tasks/materials in order for students to learn to work independently, without adult directions/prompts. It is important to note that “work systems” can reflect any type of task(s) or activities (e.g., academic, daily living skills, recreation, and leisure, etc.). Each “work system”, regardless of the nature of the specific task or activity, should address the following four questions:

  • What is the work to be done?
  • How much work?
  • When am I finished?
  • What comes next?

2. Visual Instructions: A student should be able to sequentially complete a task/activity by looking at the visual instructions given. Visual instructions will help the student to combine and organize a series of steps to obtain the desired outcome.

V. Teaching abstract concepts

Take into consideration these abstract concepts: time, relationships, multiple representations, nonverbal communication, inferences, social interactions, and idioms. Many of this concepts are easily understood by the average person, but for some people with autism, these concepts can be incomprehensible.

This means that teaching abstract concepts need to be done in a concrete way, this is typically accomplished through the use of visuals.

  • Use visual representations and repetition
  • Avoid the use of language that is at too high a level of abstraction or link abstract language with its concrete equivalent
  • Use concrete meanings to support comprehension
  • Avoid asking vague questions such as, “Why did you do that?” Instead, say, “I did not like it when you threw your toy down when I said it was time to eat

Autism in children Dubai: Conclusions

  • Use low arousal learning environment at home and school
  • Use structure both physical and for teaching
  • Pictures pictures pictures
  • Teach abstract concepts with help of concrete materials, actions, and role-playing
