3. What degrees and qualifications does the Doctor have?

As I was studying pediatrics I became fascinated with a child’s development – how he or she evolves from a newborn into a verbal, thinking being!

My love for children, sensitivity to and insight into their condition helped me choose this as my area of specialization.

Working in this field I realized that it did not just involve medicine but the fields of psychology and education which led me to specialize in those fields as well.

However, my biggest asset to my work is the fact that I am a mother and this has increased my compassion for my patients and their families.

I’m also attached to the Mediclinic City Hospital, Dubai Health Care City, and am a member of the International Social Services.

To treat your child better, I’ve earned many specializations:

  • 2012
Training for DAN! Level II, USA
  • 2009
Training for DAN! Level I, USA
  • 2007
PhD [Psychology] in Counseling & Psychotherapy
    Calamus International University, London, UK
  • 2004

  • 1989–1995
Ph.D. in Neuro-Developmental Paediatrics, University of London, UK
  • 1979–1980
MD Pediatrics, Gold Medal, University of Bombay, India

4. What are the languages spoken by Doctor & Staff?

Obviously, you are more interested in expertise and the languages are spoken to make communication easier, rather than race or nationality.

My expertise comes from 38 years of experience and 5 degrees from universities in India, UK, and training in the USA.

English, Hindi, and Tagalog are fluently spoken in the Singhania Clinic. A little bit of Arabic is also understood.

I was born in India and have also lived in the UK, USA and for the last 20 years in Dubai. Over this period more than 8,000 patients from around the world have been treated by me.

5. How many sessions will I need to take?

There is no easy answer to this question, but each session is roughly AED. 750. Depending on the package you choose and how you pay, this could be lower.

The steps are:

  • Structured Interview is 1 session. This is when the doctor will determine the package required for your child based on the session’s findings
  • Diagnosis packages are between 6 to 12 sessions and include various tests
  • Treatment packages are in sets of 10 to 12 sessions

Also, you may buy packages and pay in advance to avail of lower rates.

6. What types of therapies are there?

There are many different types of treatments depending on the developmental issues that have to be treated.

These are provided by a medically qualified doctor and are distinct in method and approach to those provided by a psychologist.

Some of the treatments are Theraplay in Autism, Social Skills training, Parent Effectiveness Training with each treatment and Beat Dyslexia training.

It is important that parents also participate in the treatment as they make the most impact on their child on a day to day basis. Treatment should be undertaken at least once a week.

7. Does the clinic prescribe medication?

Medication is always a tricky subject. Some parents have strong opinions for and against it.

One of the advantages you have here is that you can be prescribed medication from a certified doctor.

Since many medicines prescribed in developmental cases are monitored as controlled drugs by the Ministry of Health [MOH] and Dubai Health Authority [DHA], certain issues are clarified below:

  • Medication is prescribed only when needed. Many developmental issues have multiple diagnoses which require ‘controlled drugs’
  • Controlled drugs necessitate special prescription pads which are issued by the MOH and cost time and money. Meticulous records also need to be kept
  • Without a session, there is a small fee of AED. 100 for each controlled drug prescription to pay for costs incurred.
  • Prescriptions for controlled drugs must be repeated every month as per MOH regulations
  • Blood tests should be done annually to make sure the child is progressing well. Stimulant medicines require regular height, weight & blood pressure checkups
  • A special dropper to administer medicines to small children is used to ensure correct dosage
  • Passport copies must be given when prescriptions are needed
  • Medication is closely monitored to prevent side effects

Generally, prospective patients take time to make their decision, so the answers have been spread over a few weeks.

8. How many doctors work in the clinic?

Rebecca Grisdale, BSc Psychology, has joined me and will assist in therapies once her licensing issues are resolved. However, there is only one doctor, me 🙂

To help your clinic visit be comfortable, 2 nurses are there to assist your child.

Every effort is made to stay current in this rapidly evolving field.

Organizations such as The Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs [MAPS] and The British Psychological Society [BPS] are regular resources.

Continuous training is something you can count on. Which is why I have ended up with 5 degrees including 2 PhDs. 🙂 In addition to the MD.

The Dubai Health Care Authorities also require a certain number of continuous education credits every year for license renewals of both the doctor and clinic staff.

Being attached to the Mediclinic City Hospital also allows me to see medical patients and provides you with access to hospital facilities for better care.

10. How long has the Clinic been in Dubai?

The first patient was treated in November 1995 at the Singhania Children’s Clinic in Jumeirah.

Those were trying times. Ownership rules were in flux and changed every few months. Team members included speech therapists, therapists, and even pediatricians.

The concept of neuro-developmental issues was not well understood by the licensing authorities. Some of the specialist degrees are still not acknowledged 🙂

After the various Gulf Wars the clinic was moved to Karama to cut cost, and then to its present location at the Dubai Health Care City in 2006.

So far more than 8,000 patients from more than 60 nationalities have been treated by the Singhania Clinic. And detailed, 20+ page reports have been given to all those with developmental issues.

These reports are thorough and comprehensive and have been used by other professionals around the world for on-going treatment.

Generally, prospective patients take time to make their decision, so the answers have been spread over a few weeks.

11. What tests are used in the Clinic during assessments?

It is important to diagnose and treat children with neurodevelopmental disorders as early as possible so that their quality of life doesn’t suffer greatly. And they have an opportunity to realize their potential.

Various tests are used to reach a comprehensive diagnosis. Most primary disorders are accompanied by other secondary or tertiary issues as well and must be treated.

Over the years, tests have been developed by various experts around the world. But because these are culture and language specific, to adapt them to the multicultural patients in Dubai requires experience and an intuitive talent.

The British Psychological Association has certified me on the use of these tests in different cultures. I’ve also created the Indian Picture Puzzle test that has been accepted internationally.

More than 30 tests are used at the clinic. Your child will be tested using the ones that are required. Some of the tests used are below. To see a complete list with prices click here.

  • BecksYouth
  • WISC – IV
  • CBCL
  • CELF Language
  • WIPPSI – R
  • Autistic Continuum
  • Reynell Language
  • Sally Anne
  • Brown ADD Scale
  • VOJTA
  • Vineland Social Scale
  • Nisonger

All tests are priced separately and are chosen based on the presenting issues of your child. They are used as an adjunct to interviews, observation, and experience.

No developmental disorder is black and white and its diagnosis is based on clinical expertise. At times, translators are used for tests so that children can understand the requirements easily.

Generally, prospective patients take time to make their decision, so the answers have been spread over a few weeks.

12. Does Singhania clinic take insurance?

The small population in the United Arab Emirates has led to health insurance being inflexible and coverage is limited to certain issues only. Hopefully, things will change.

Also in the past, there have been limitations on what is allowed based on nationalities.

But, insurance cover for medical cases is available and the clinic will provide you with the necessary documentation.

However, no insurance company has agreed to provide a cover for neurodevelopmental cases. So far. The search to make it convenient for you continues.

There is a discount available for packages paid in advance though. 🙂
