Children with Aspergers Dubai: What is Asperger syndrome?

Asperger syndrome was first described by a Viennese Pediatrician Hans Asperger

in the 1940s. He observed boys with normal intelligence and language who had

social and communication problems like autism. In 2013, Asperger Syndrome was clubbed under the Autism Spectrum Disorders umbrella in the DSM5 diagnostic manual of mental disorders.

Asperger syndrome is generally considered to be on the “high functioning” end of the spectrum. Asperger’s Syndrome is well recognized by media and the typical caricature is that of a robot like a person who is a whizz at math and is isolated from his peers. This is far from the truth. Children with Asperger Syndrome may

This is far from the truth. Children with Asperger Syndrome may have average to above average intelligence but may suffer from learning difficulties.

Children with Aspergers Dubai: Learning difficulties seen in Asperger’s syndrome

They may be hyperlexic that is they can read above and beyond their age level but they may not understand or comprehend what they read.

They may also have dyslexia or difficulty with reading especially if they have not been taught phonics and sound blending in early years. In the early years because of difficulty with verbal reasoning they may also have math problems.

They need to be explicitly taught math concepts like greater than, less than etc. Word problems are particularly difficult and these children need to be taught different words for plus like add, and. Similarly, for minus, they need to know to take away.

They need to learn how to deduce what math concept needs to be applied to solve the problem.

Social problems

Many children with Asperger’s Syndrome are sociable. They actually like to be with their peers but because of lack of social competency, they are awkward and bumbling.

They may appear unsympathetic, rude or overly familiar. They may not recognize social cues and may push themselves into a group. They may talk too loudly and appear rude or dominating. Some of their behaviours and comments can be embarrassing.

They may not understand the notion of private information and may ask a person’s age, weight or salary. On the other hand, they may share too much of their own personal information even when not asked. Likewise, they may give unsolicited advice.

Language

In Asperger’s Syndrome, the language appears to be normal. In fact, it is pedantic and overly formal. They may say ‘beckon’ instead of ‘call’. Some children find it difficult to understand idiomatic speech and need direct instructions or language.

For example, if you say, ‘Do you want to wash your hands?’ the child may just reply yes but not go ahead and carry out the instruction. The reciprocal interaction may be limited. These children then may talk AT you rather than TO you.

They may expound on the topic of their interest and not care about the listener’s interest or boredom. They rarely ask for your opinion and cannot see other people’s point of view.

Behaviour

Behaviour may sometimes be a problem. Though these children over-conform to rules they may not be able to deviate in different circumstances. For example, if a child told that drinking cola is bad for health may stop everyone from drinking it. Because of rigidity, they may not follow an adult agenda if it does not match their own.

Sensory

Finally, sensory overload may result in meltdowns and difficult behaviour. Oversensitivity to sounds, touch or sight may cause problems.

Children with Aspergers Dubai: Conclusion

Asperger Syndrome in children does not impair their language or intelligence but impacts social communication and social behaviour which then makes them outcasts into peer groups. Nonetheless, explicit teaching and training go a long way to alleviate their problems and improving their social competency.
